URGE YOUR PA LEGISLATORS TO OPPOSE SB 106

SB 106 includes the following amendments to the PA constitution:

  • Declares that the state constitution does not grant any right relating to abortion, including no right to public funding of the procedure
  • Gives the legislature power to stop any regulation with a simple majority that is not subject to governor signature or veto
  • Creates additional voter ID requirements
  • Imposes stricter residency and age restrictions on new voters
  • Requires that elections be audited by the PA Auditor General
  • Changes the election process for Lieutenant Governor

If SB 106 is passed again in the upcoming session of the General Assembly, the amendment will be placed on the ballot for Pennsylvanians to vote on. If the bill passes early in the upcoming session, these amendment questions could be on the May 13 primary ballot.

TAKE ACTION: TELL THE SENATE TO PASS THE DISCLOSE ACT

Voters have a right to know who is making large campaign contributions to influence their votes. Undisclosed political spending has exploded in recent elections, with roughly $1 billion spent since 2010 by dark money groups. This represents massive growth over the last few decades, with many recent federal elections setting records for the most outside political spending.

The funding that candidates and dark money groups raise goes largely to advertising, which is intentionally used to influence voters’ decisions. Although funding is necessary to run for office, dark, undisclosed money opens the door for elected officials to take office without the public knowing which organizations helped them get elected.

The Democracy is Strengthened by Casting Light on Spending in Elections Act or DISCLOSE Act of 2021 (s. 443) requires organizations to disclose political donations over $10,000 during an election cycle. The League supports this legislation because we believe that Americans deserve to know who is trying to influence their vote.

CLICK HERE to contact your senators today and tell them now is the time to root out dark money that has increasing influence on our federal elections.

IT IS TIME TO TAKE ACTION – DEFEND OUR DEMOCRACY

SAY NO TO JUDICIAL GERRYMANDERING (HB 38)

HB 38 threatens to undermine the independence of the Judicial Branch of our Commonwealth. This bill will effectively give legislative leaders the opportunity to gerrymander our courts.

HB 38 is a constitutional amendment. This means the bill must be passed in two consecutive legislative sessions and then go before voters at the ballot. It cannot be vetoed by the Governor. If this bill should pass by early to mid February it could be on the ballot as soon as May this year. We must stop this terrible bill or face an extensive and costly campaign to fight it at the ballot box.

CALL YOUR REPRESENTATIVE TODAY AND TELL THEM TO VOTE NO ON JUDICIAL GERRYMANDERING (HB 38).

SAY NO TO PA HOUSE BILL 2207

For six years Fair Districts of PA has asked for an IMPARTIAL independent citizens commission for legislative and congressional districts. Overwhelmingly PA votes want fair districts. Legislative leaders have ignored voters.

Now, HB 2207 has been introduced claiming to be a “citizens” commission. This is NOT the impartial citizens commission voters asked for.

  • It fails to end the conflict of interest that allows party leaders to influence commissioners.
  • It creates a politically appointed partisan commission, not an impartial commission.
  • It alters the PA Constitution to allow one party complete control over redistricting

Here is the good news: Rep. Samuelson is putting forth an amendment that would revive the impartial Citizens Commission Constitutional Amendment for both congressional and state legislative districts. If passed, we would have a real independent citizens commission in 2031.

CALL YOUR REPRESENTATIVE TODAY AND TELL THEM PA VOTERS WANT A REAL IMPARTIAL INDEPENDENT CITIZENS COMMISSION.

Ready to get started?

  • If you don’t have contact information for your state house representative, look them up here.
  • Use this sample script to prepare your talking points:

My name is XXX. I live in XXX. I am calling to ask you to oppose HB 2207 in its present form.   This bill was introduced on Jan 4. It had no public hearings or input. It creates a politically appointed partisan redistricting commission. It does nothing to increase transparency or define criteria in map drawing. I want an impartial independent citizens redistricting commission with strict transparency and map drawing criteria. Please support and vote for Rep. Steve Samuelson’s amendment that would finally give PA voters the Independent Citizens Commission that they have been asking for.
